Becoming Foster-Parents

Orr Shalom's 550 foster families care for 750 children from Hadera to Gadera. These wonderful families provide a safe and loving home to babies, children and teenagers from every sector of society, who were previously living in distress with their biological parents.  In addition, they give Orr Shalom children the opportunity to experience a healthy model of family life where they can thrive in a loving, secure and stable environment.

Foster parents are volunteers and do not receive a salary, although they do receive a monthly stipend for the child's expenses, from the Ministry of Welfare. They also receive a basket of services from Orr Shalom which includes therapeutic support when needed, enrichment activities, school and medical expenses etc.

Foster parents give loving care to their foster children, while at the same time maintaining the connection between the child and his/her biological parents where possible. We believe that maintaining this connection is necessary for the emotional well-being of the child, and that it has an important influence on the child's identity and sense of belonging. For this reason, we work to establish cooperative relationships between the biological parents and the foster parents, with support from Orr Shalom and the biological family's social worker. Structured regular visits by biological parents are a very important component in the life of an Orr Shalom child and we encourage these visits as much as possible.

Financial and Emotional Support
Orr Shalom foster parents receive a monthly budget for the children in their care.

In terms of emotional support, our foster parents have regular meetings with their Orr Shalom social workers who are also on call in case our parents need to consult with them. There are also support groups and seminars in the course of the year.
