On the 23.11.09, in the Daniel Hotel in Herziliya, Orr Shalom held a training day for foster-families that care for special needs children. These children have different physical and/or mental disabilities.
This year, the theme of the training day was the quality of life of the foster-families and children.
The participants learnt about strategies for improving the quality of life, by identifying areas for improvement and methods that will assist in achieving it. There was a discussion about how the responsibility for improving the quality of life of the children normally fell on the parents, and how they could succeed in doing this.
The next session dealt with sex education for special needs children, and the connection between sex education and quality of life.
Following this session, the participants heard from a social worker who lost his eyes and one hand when he was in a car accident as a child. Following this, he was raised by a foster-family and in a dormitory. His lecture was entitled, "To raise a special child."
The day finished with all the participants splitting into groups and sharing experiences with one another.
It was an extremely successful event, and we look forward to running it again next year.
