The AVI Fund: Helping Orr Shalom Graduates Transition to Independence

At age 18, Orr Shalom children are considered adults.  However, many of these teens do not have homes to which to return and are expected to become fully financially and emotionally responsible upon reaching age 18. Transitioning to self-sufficiency without a support framework can jeopardize the progress they have made over years of rehabilitation, and can cause major setbacks.

The AVI Fund was created in memory of Avi Rosenberg, z"l, to support Orr Shalom graduates who are inducted into the Israeli army. Avi, the son of a former member of the Board of Directors of Orr Shalom, lost his life in a tragic traffic accident in 2000. Avi Rosenberg was a young man who cared deeply about children and admired the work of Orr Shalom. The AVI Fund was established to perpetuate his memory by assisting Orr Shalom graduates who serve in the IDF or as National Service volunteers.

The AVI Fund enables Orr Shalom to continue to be a source of support for youth that grew up in Orr Shalom homes, even once government support has ceased. The Fund helps these teens before, during and after their army service or national service, assisting with expenses for which their parents would normally pay. These include food, clothing and housing support for when they are off-duty, army equipment, and modest allowances for spending money.  In addition, the Fund helps finance professional training or higher education post army or national service.
