Supplemental Education
When an Orr Shalom child is placed in a home, much time and energy is spent adjusting to the new family and structure. Almost all of the children are facing educational difficulties and deficiencies and are performing below grade level and their own personal potential.
An array of interventions is provided by Orr Shalom to give the children an opportunity to close academic gaps and acquire fundamental learning skills. We strive to ensure that the children benefit from an early diagnosis of any learning disabilities and a proper educational program is coordinated between the school, house parents and tutors in order to provide the children with a better chance to succeed academically.
Orr Shalom's Supplemental Educational services include:
Individual Diagnosis of Each Child’s Academic Aptitude
Orr Shalom arranges formal didactic testing for all children, in order to identify, assess and treat learning disorders. Neuro-development functions are evaluated, determining the roots of learning disabilities as well as each child’s strengths and appropriate learning strategies. Foster parents or house parents are provided with operative instructions and tools to ensure academic assistance appropriate for each child.
Arranging After-School Tutors
Tutors work with the children throughout the year according to an individual program designed to suit the needs of each child. Tutors help the children strengthen their educational progress and hone their learning skills, producing better school achievements and increasing children’s self-confidence and awareness. In addition, we strive to ensure that there will be an adult on hand to ensure that the children do their school work and to assist them in their assignments.
Educational Fees
Orr Shalom pays for extra-curricular programs, cultural events, educational trips and special courses, as well as higher fees for children attending religious schools. Orr Shalom ensures that our children have the same opportunities as their peers.
Providing Books And Supplies
Textbooks, notebooks, pens and pencils are just some of the educational supplies required by every student. These materials often need to be replenished repeatedly during the year.
The impact of the program is assessed with every individual child. When a child is placed in an Orr Shalom Home, he or she needs a period of emotional, physical and educational adjustment. At the end of every school year, Orr Shalom professionals evaluate each child emotionally and scholastically by utilizing a government-approved scale called "Shitat Haraf" – the Bar Scale. Together with tutors, the following year's treatment for the child is planned based on the findings of the evaluation.
Orr Shalom views education as a crucial tool in helping children achieve independence and success as adults.
