Orr Shalom Family Group Homes

Orr Shalom pioneered the establishment of family therapeutic group-homes for children who have suffered from severe abuse or neglect. These children are among Israel's most vulnerable population. Having been subjected to emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse, they are deprived of love, alone, ignored and fearful.

To care for them, Orr Shalom operates 21 family therapeutic group-homes, each of which accommodates between 7 to 11 children (ages 6 - 18) who were removed from their families. With a married couple serving as house parents, and a psychologist, social worker, academic tutor and counselor on staff, the children live in a supportive therapeutic environment and are provided with a chance for a better future.

Our Homes are located in Haifa, Holon, Orr Yehuda, Abu Ghosh, Jerusalem, Mevasseret, Ma’ale Adumim, Ashkelon, Be’er Sheva, and Eilat in the heart of the community. Where appropriate, we strive to place children locally so that they can continue in their familiar educational and social frameworks.  The Homes are open and we encourage the children to participate in external activities with their normative peers, such as after-school enrichment and youth movements.

While the Orr Shalom Homes create an intimate and warm environment, the children also learn boundaries and begin to understand that they have obligations as well as privileges. Here, for the first time, the children experience a healthy model of family life where they learn how to "behave normally", thrive in a loving, secure and stable environment, and see for themselves that a family unit can be a positive experience.
